How to estimate siding

Wall area = perimeter x wall height. Each triangular gable adds width x height / 2. Subtract windows and doors (a typical window is about 15 sq ft, a door about 20). One square of siding covers 100 sq ft.

Add 10% waste for simple houses and up to 15% for many corners and openings. Vinyl siding usually comes about 2 squares per box; check the carton.

Questions

How many squares of siding for a 1,500 sq ft house?

It depends on wall area, not floor area. A typical two-story 1,500 sq ft home has about 1,600 to 2,000 sq ft of wall, or 16 to 22 squares with waste.

Do I include gables in siding measurements?

Yes. Each gable is a triangle: width x height / 2.

How much does siding cost per square?

Installed vinyl siding commonly runs about $400 to $800 per square, depending on product and region.
