How to calculate asphalt
Hot mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot once compacted, or roughly 110 lb per square yard per inch of thickness. Tons = length x width x thickness (in) / 12 x 145 / 2,000.
Residential driveways are usually 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over 4 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base. Add a few percent extra for edges and uneven base.
