Roofing Squares Calculator
Measure the house footprint, choose the roof pitch, and get the roof area in squares plus how many bundles of shingles to order.

How roofing squares work
One roofing square covers 100 square feet of roof. Most architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square.
Roof area is larger than the house footprint because of the slope. A 6/12 roof is about 12% larger than its footprint; a 12/12 roof is about 41% larger. Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs and 15% or more for hips, valleys and dormers.
Questions
How many squares is my roof?
Multiply the footprint (including overhangs) by the pitch factor, then divide by 100. For a 40 x 30 ft house with a 6/12 pitch, that is about 15 to 16 squares before waste.
How much waste should I add for roofing?
About 10% for simple gable roofs, 15% for hip roofs, and up to 20% for complex roofs with many valleys.
How much do roofers charge per square?
Installed prices commonly range from about $350 to $650 per square for architectural shingles, depending on region, tear-off and roof complexity.
