How to estimate fence materials

Sections = fence length / post spacing, rounded up. You need one more post than sections, plus an extra post for each gate. Wood privacy fences usually use 8 ft post spacing and 3 rails for 6 ft tall fences.

Pickets = fence length in inches / (picket width + gap). Plan about two 50 lb bags of concrete per post for typical 4x4 posts set 2 ft deep.

Questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

Usually 6 to 8 feet for wood fences. Closer spacing is stronger in high-wind areas.

How many pickets for 100 feet of fence?

With 5.5 inch pickets and no gap, about 219 pickets.

How much concrete per fence post?

Roughly one to two 50 lb bags per post, depending on hole size and depth.
